Yes, yes, I know. Work through it! Don't abandon that baby! But, crikey, I've started that sucker from scratch four times and the protagonist still has no voice. I haven't given up on it; I still love the premise, but I've got to figure out what's wrong and there was no way on God's green Earth it was going to be finished in time. So I'm making nice with the chippy I had going on the side. That one has voice to spare.
And let me tell you, I am having such a blast with this one. I've gotten twice as far with my drafting in half the time. It's moody and has a weird structure and is told from three different perspectives. *sigh* Love. It. It may never sell for all the weird, but boy howdy do I love it. Which is all I can ask.
Hm. This seems short. Allow me to refer you to this, which is sweet and a tiny bit sad, but mostly funny in a bookish sort of way.
Oh, and for those of you who wondered -- I'm done licking my Superbowl wounds. We'll get 'em next year. (There are no fair-weather fans in my house. Those are my boys, win or lose. And yes, I mean MY. I'm very possessive.)
How was your weekend? (I already know about you, Megan. ;) )
Hey, if YOU love it, and feel its energy, so will with reader. So good for you! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks, Linda!
DeleteI agree. Work on the one that isn't resisting you. Maybe by the time you're done with the wonky manuscript, the other one will be more compliant.
ReplyDeleteI dream of owning a soda shop. Perhaps I could attach a used bookstore! Neither would make me any money, but oh, how happy I'd be!
I'm hoping the other will be more compliant when I go back to it. I do try not to abandon a good plot when I have one, but this time the character just wasn't there and I couldn't nail him down. Normally, I'd power through, but the deadline took me down. *sigh*
DeleteI can honestly say I have never dreamed of owning a store of any kind. I'll come work for you though. I've been told I'm kind of a jerk. *ba dum bum*
I just saw who brought us the post today! Been there...not with the Bruins, but you know what I mean.
ReplyDeleteOops. I actually forgot to update it. That was from last Friday. *blushes* All changed!
DeleteI agree with everyone else. Write the one that makes you happy and the energy will reach the page. Good luck at the workshop!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Robena!
DeleteYep you totally have to write the one that has the energy for you right now. Glad it's flowing!
ReplyDeleteAs I said to everyone else, I don't normally abandon something just because I lost the flow, because everything I write hits that wall sometimes. This one, though, had no flow ever. Not when I started, not when I got 20,000 words into it. It needs reimagining and I just don't have the time to do that and be ready for the workshop. Booo. But, yeah, I'm happy the new one is flowing. :)
DeleteI love working on an ms that comes so easy! Best of luck getting everything the way you'd like it for the workshop.
ReplyDeleteI'm doing a workshop soon, too! I think I'm going to pull a WIP off the shelf and work on that... if I can pull myself away from the ms that really is flowing that I can't submit.
It is difficult to pull yourself away when things are flowing. Just ask my poor, lonely husband. ;) Have a great time at your workshop!
DeleteThe one that flows is always much more fun to write. Good luck getting it all down by the conference.
ReplyDeleteExactly, which is why I don't let myself off easily when it's not flowing. I don't want to get stuck with a perpetual case of the Oooh Shineys.
DeleteLOL "recommend Nicholas Sparks"
ReplyDeleteI repeat, lol!
Workshops, conferences, get-togethers of all types are SO good for bouncing ideas around, and ya know, just shmoozin' (yes yes, we all realize, you AREN'T a shmoozer, but still).
Glad you are having fun writing, that makes me very happy.
Megan, I'll run the bookstore part, I HAVE always wanted a shop of my own. For decades.
That one cracked me up, too. And no, I'm not a schmoozer, but I'm working on it. *schmooze schmooze schmooze*
DeleteYay!
DeleteMy days I worked for a YEAR on this novel before even starting to write it. (And it was already a completed ms, which I decided to completely re-do.) I kept having breakthroughs, and then new challenges, bk, ch, bk, ch. And I know how you feel about not wanting to put off the fight. However, it sounds like you made the right decision and will probably get things from the conference/critique that you can bring back to Novel A !
