Left or Right

About a week ago, romance author Jennifer Crusie posted this to her blog:

(Go here to see a lovely, colorful graphic of left brain/right brain theory.)

It says that the left half of the brain rules words and language, while the right half imparts creativity. Being a creative writer, I got to wondering whether I was left brain or right brain dominant. (Okay, I would have wondered anyway. I can't help it. Not knowing stuff gives me mental hives.)

So, naturally, I darted my virtual butt all over the internet looking for quizzes. They're everywhere, but I only took this one. And this one. And this one more. I like a consensus. IMHO, the last one was the most thorough, but it didn't really matter, because they all said the same thing.

Fifty/fifty. Well, except one that said fifty-one/fifty, weighted toward the left. (No, I'm not sure why, either.) Anyway, now I'm left to wonder if that result means that I'm equally adept at writing and creating or if I'm only mediocre in both areas. Decidedly unhelpful.

So, I'm throwing it over to you. Which is your dominant side? Take a quiz, let me know. I'll be over here applying calamine lotion to my brain. Damn hives.

  1. Apparently I'm 51/49, slightly more left-brained. Good to be balanced, right?

  2. Mine shows 40/60, significantly more right-brained. Which is odd given that I've made my living as a tech writer. :) But I think it's pretty spot-on.

  3. I am 45% L, 55% R. So, I'm either good at a variety of tasks, or not adept enough at anything to make a living. Time will tell.

  4. ahhaahaha. i am 63 right and 37 left. i think the spelling and reading questions were a dead give-away. lol. thanks for that! i LOVE tests like this.

  5. I am 60% left brained, 40% right. Which might be why the Lone Woman and I are so compatible. How did Magnum score?

  6. I am SO sending Daniel over here when he comes home for lunch! (Fingers crossed that no huge damn crime happens and he misses his break tonight.)

Okay, I love tests like this, except for the fact that those first two were impossible to do honestly. Some questions I can't answer just one, it's both or neither.

    First quiz: 60% left/40% right.
Second: 8 answers to the right side and 10 to the left.
Last one: 53% left and 47% right.

I appear to be very cusp-y, like you. Wonder if this is a Virgo trait?

  7. Holyfreakingcrap. You would NOT believe the drama here tonight. One would think I was forcing the man to to to..... I don't know, the worst thing EVER!

So, he barely makes it through the first quiz, over-thinking the damn thing nearly to death, questioning every question, turning every phrase and word and idea over and around a zillion gawdamn times... FINALLY agrees to do the second quiz after I berate and nag and whine and eventually just give up and completely lose interest.

Don't ask about the third one. Let's just say it's a good thing that gun, taser, and pepper spray on his belt were NOT within my reach, and I had already set his lunch out BEFORE we started this entire ordeal.

(Here's something I had known but somehow had forgotten, I'm blaming Mercury. And the Full Moon eclipse.) Dan, apparently isn't a quiz type of person. As you will be able to see by this:

    35% left 65% right
18 on the left 0 on the right
    51% left 49% right

Julie (who is now extremely sorry she ever thought inviting him here was a good idea)

  8. @LindaG, Who said we were balanced?

    @Skye, Sounds about right. :)

@Megan, That's what I can't figure out. With you, I'd say the former.

@Magoo, You? The graphic artist? Right brained? The hell you say! ;)

@TheCaptain, It could be. Magnum came out 55/45, so slightly dominant left, but still quite creative. But he's a mechanical designer, so that makes sense.

@Julie, Now, see? I'd have pegged you as more right brained. Goes to show what I know. Also, LMAO! You should have quit while you were ahead. Poor Dan.

  9. First test 35 L 65 R
Second test - I must have done something wrong as I didn't see and answer so I moved on to the third and it was 35 L 65 R

I like the picture of the brain - one all wordy and the other colored.

  10. I saw this right after you posted it and didn't have time to comment or take the quizzes... bad day. So Julie sent me back. I am 46L / 54R (I only took the third one since I'm still writing papers.) My favorite part: my least dominant characteristics are logical and holistic. That seems about right. Although I have to say some of the questions made no sense to me, so I answered randomly, which probably skews the results. Ya think? ;-)

and lol at Julie and Dan!

  11. @Judie, Look how creative and emotional you are! Great traits for a fantasy writer. :)

@BarbN, So sorry you had a bad day. And leave it to Julie to send you back. ;) Holistic was one of my least dominant traits, as well. Though, logical was second only to linear in my dominant traits. I can't remember what the others were. Hmm... As to the skewed results, that's your illogical part at work. Hehehe.

  12. Quizzes! I love doing these. So the first one I was 40% left and 60% right, the second one was 0 answers for right and 18 for left and the last one was 55% left and 45% right. Pass the calamine, please!

  13. Ha, thought I would be more left than right. First quiz 80R/20L, Second quiz 12R/6L, and the final was 54R/46L. Right side is definitely prettier with all the color. My messy desk is driving me crazy so the left brain is knocking loudly.

  14. @karenb1963, Here. Remember to let it dry before your put your hair back on. ;)

@Carol, It's so strange how some of us had a large disparity, while others, myself included, were pretty even across the board.
